5 SIMPLE WAYS WE CAN ALL HELP THE EARTH!
The world united in 2020 as we faced a new normal in our fight against Covid-19. During the pause of our normal daily life, positive changes occurred in the environment; air pollution began clearing up, water quality was improving, and the snow was more reflective. A year after primarily being in lockdown and living a slower-paced life, nature.com reported that carbon emissions in 2020 fell by 6.4% worldwide because of lack of air travel and less commutes in our day-to-day lifestyles. One change that each one of us in one way or another made in our lives was a change for the better for the environment.
While it may not be feasible to ask everyone to stay home all the time for the environment (after the pandemic) or alter transportation methods, there are other things that we can do day-by-day to help. If everyone makes a small change, it can create a big impact on the environment and on our future. Despite the positive strides forward, the earth is still in need of our help. According to the David Attenborough documentary, A Life on Our Planet – since the 1950s, ‘wild animal populations have more than halved’ because of human intervention on the planet. The world population rose from 2.3 billion to 7.8 billion since the 1930s, with a decrease in remaining wilderness from 66% to 35%. According to Attenborough, helping the planet is less about nature and the environment and more about our ability and chance to live on the planet.

If environmental changes aren’t made soon, the earth’s resources can deplete and humans may not be able to endure a life on earth which sounds about as scary as it actually is. We now know that our actions have an impact good and bad. With that being said we at Pachira wanted to brainstorm some ideas to help be part of the growing sustainability movement.
We've brainstormed and put together some small and easy changes you can make in your life to live more sustainably:
1. Daily Commute
Start with bike rides to a friend’s place or a stop at a local drugstore. Carpool when you can and try to take the train or bus when it is possible.
2. Energy Use
Unplugging computers, tvs, lamps and other electronics when they are not in use as well as switching your light bulbs to energy efficient ones helps reduce consumption.
3. Waste management
Start composting your food and other items! Food scraps, tissues, printer paper, wood clippings and even cardboard are all safe to put in the compost! The less waste that goes into the landfill the more it can help our planet.
4. Communication
Start a green conversation! Whether it is through phone calls and meetings or on social media. Maybe use your hobbies to encourage a greener lifestyle. Paint a picture, make a video, write a poem, knit something that inspires environmental habits. Bring awareness to the perils of our environment and how we can help!
5. Shopping
Shop more mindfully, for example when purchasing items for the kitchen or washroom, look for long-lasting eco-friendly products.
